SCHOLARSHIPS
Adkins Teaching Scholarship
Mrs. Gaynell Adkins as a remembrance started this fund for her husband Robert, to fund a scholarship for graduating senior students of St. Marys High School who are pursuing a teaching degree.
AMVETS Scholarship
The AMVETS Post 40 of Pleasants County has created a scholarship for students in St. Marys High School. This scholarship is need based and a preference is given to an AMVETS son or daughter.
Betsy Putnam Scholarship
This fund was created in memory of Mrs. Betsy Putnam, a teacher, counselor of St. Marys High School by her daughter, Mrs. Nancy Hollister. Criteria for this scholarship are financial need, involved in extracurricular activities, and a graduating senior of St. Marys High School.
Bill Hanlin Scholarship
This scholarship is just getting started as of this writing (October 07) and a criteria has not been established. I expect this to be done early in 2008 and a scholarship given in 2009.
BPW Scholarship
The Business and Professional Women of Pleasants County have created a scholarship for Students in Pleasants County Schools including the Mid Ohio Valley Technical Center.
Class of 1950 Scholarship
This is a scholarship created by the members of the class of 1950 of St. Marys High School. This is a needs based scholarship with an essay to be written and a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Class of 1956 Scholarship
The St. Marys High School class of 1956 created this scholarship. Again this is a needs based scholarship with a minimum GPA and a letter conveying the student's goals and aspirations.
Class of 1957 Scholarship
This is a scholarship that has just started. The class is raising money to fund it to the $20,000 level. It is need based with a minimum GPA and a letter conveying the student's goals and aspirations.
Class of 1967 Scholarship
This is a new scholarship. It is one of the classes that have a large number of members. They are in the fund raising process as this is written. They will give a scholarship in the 2007 - 2008 school year. There is a minimum GPA and a letter to convey the student's goals etc.
Class of 1984 Scholarship
Again this is a new scholarship that is not funded. Members are raising money to be able to give a scholarship. This is another one that is need based with a letter to be written to convey the student's goals and aspirations.
Class of 1985 Scholarship
This is a need-based scholarship that is building its funds. It has a minimum GPA and a need for a letter to be written on the goals of the student. I expect this scholarship to be able to give a scholarship in 2008.
David Mankins Scholarship
Mr. and Mrs. Mankins created this fund in memory of their son David. The criteria for this scholarship require the student to be a graduate of St. Marys High School and be entered into college. The student must be involved in 4-H to receive this scholarship.
Delno Higgins Scholarship
This is a fund created by Mrs. Elizabeth Higgins in memory of her husband Delno. The student receiving this award must show financial need, write a letter demonstrating how this scholarship would further their goals.
Educational Trust Fund
This fund is a fund that now gives 5 scholarships each year. These scholarships are for four years and are in the amount of $1000 each year.
Criteria: Must live in Pleasants County, show need, be a graduating senior in St. Marys High School, and have at least a 2.5 GPA.
Educational Trust Loan Fund
This is a fund that is in the process of closing. The fund gives loans to students that are seniors of St. Marys High School. As soon as the current enrollees have graduated this fund will roll over into the Educational Trust Scholarship Fund.
Hinter Krenn Scholarship
This is a scholarship that was started by Jean Ruckman in memory of her aunt Francis Hinter Krenn. Mrs. Krenn was a teacher in Doddridge County and very supportive of education. This scholarship is for students in Doddridge County schools and has requirements of a 2.0 GPA and a letter demonstrating how this scholarship would further their educational goals.
Joseph Wright Scholarship
This is a scholarship that was created in memory of Col. Joseph D. Wright who lost his life in the Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, LA. The criteria is similar to other except that a 3.0 GPA is needed upon graduation from St. Marys High School. The student must be attending a 2 or 4 year academic college and demonstrate need.
M. L. "Skeet" Simonton Pharmacy Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Mr. Simontons wife and family for a pharmacy scholarship to the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy.
Pickens Memorial Scholarship
This is a scholarship that was created by Claire and Ruth Pickens daughters, Mary Ann, Linda, and Jane. The criteria states that the recipient must be a graduate of St. Marys High School graduate have a 2.5 GPA upon graduation, provide an essay as their aspirations, and demonstrate need.
Powell Law Office Scholarship
This Scholarship was created by JC Powell of Charleston WV, who had a father and grandfather who were attorney's is Pleasants County. This provides for a scholarship to law school at West Virginia University.
St. Marys Athletic Boosters Scholarship
The St. Marys High School Athletic Boosters created this scholarship for graduating senior of the school. This is a needs based scholarship with an essay that must be written and a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Wherry Scholarship
Mrs. Louise Wherry created this scholarship in memory of her husband Bernard Wherry. The recipient of this scholarship must be enrolled in an accredited college, must be a junior or senior, or graduate student, with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA at the time of application, actively involved in a community service activity either in his or her home county or in college.
PERPETUAL CARE FUNDS
Beech Run Cemetery Fund
This fund is for the perpetual care of the two Beech Run Cemeteries near Wasp, close to Arvilla in northeastern Pleasants County. The Founders of this Fund have a group set up to administer the care of these cemeteries.
IOOF Cemetery Fund
This fund was created to combine the two cemeteries in downtown St. Marys and have them under a group of advisors. These advisors are organized to handle the perpetual care of these two cemeteries.
Maple Lane Cemetery Fund
This fund was created by a board created by the Masonic Lodge #41 in St. Marys to make it a perpetual care cemetery. This group has elected officers and has a caretaker to do the work required.
Pleasants Memorial Estates Fun
This is a fund for the perpetual care of the Pleasants Memorial Estate Cemetery in Eureka, WV. This is a privately held cemetery that has joined the Foundation to care for their cemetery.
Pt. Lookout Cemetery Fund
This is a fund that was created by a group of people who were taking care of the cemetery at Point Lookout, WV. This group has elected officers and has a caretaker to do the work required.
Zoar Cemetery Fund
This fund was created by the Trustees of the Zoar Cemetery. It is located near the Zoar Baptist Church, Zoar, WV. The trustees are functioning as a group to care for the cemetery. The caretaker is one of the trustees at the moment. This group has a succession plan in place.
ENDOWMENT FUNDS
Boys and Girls Club Fund
This fund was created for the use of the Boys and Girls Club in St. Marys. The interest is to be used to do the work of the Club. It can be used in any way the club would want it to be used for the good of the children involved.
Clarence and Elsie Maxwell Fund
Mr. & Mrs. Maxwell's daughters, Barbara and Becky, created this fund, for the Ministerial Alliance of Pleasants County. The fund will be administered by the Pleasants Community Foundation for the use of the Alliance. The interest from the funds can be use for the good of the Alliance
Cohen Community Fund
This fund was created by the Cohen Family for the administration of the Pleasants Community Foundation. It can be used to fund all of the functions of the Foundation.
David Pitts Endowment for St. Marys High School
This fund was created by David Pitts to help students that are needy. This is administered by the administration of the high school.
Doug & Edie Taylor Emergency Service Fund
This fund is for training and other needs of local emergency agencies, such as the fire departments and ambulance squads.
Habitat for Humanity Fund
The Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity created this fund in memory of Carlton Buttrey. This fund may be used at the will and pleasure of the board of directors of Habitat and the board of directors of the Pleasants Community Foundation.
Heart of Pleasants Fund
This fund is one that can be used for the good of the community. It can be used at the will and pleasure of the Pleasants Community Foundation Board of Directors. All monies must be given to a 501 C 3 group.
Humane Society Fund
The Humane Society group in Pleasants County started this fund for their use as they see fit. They may use this fund for any reason their board may deem necessary.
Major Medical Fund
This fund was created by the "Onion Gang" to fund medical and emergency needs of people in the Pleasants County area.
Pleasants County Public Library
This is a building fund for the Pleasants County Public Library in the future. It is to be used when the funding from other sources are no longer available.
People Helping People
This fund was created by a group of citizens to help people who have needs. This fund can be used for all kinds of needs. A group of five person committee take in applications and do a screening before awards are made.
Sister Memorial K-9 Fund
This fund was created by Lynn and Judy Phair for helping those who might need a service dog for some purpose as seeing eye dog or other kinds of dogs that could be used by handicapped people.
St. Marys High School Alumni Fund
This fund was created by the officers of the St. Marys High School Alumni for their activites during the alumni weekend.
St. Marys Community Band Fund
This fund was created by Wesly and Rose Anne Riggs for the St. Marys Community Band. This is to purchase music and other items the Community Band may need.
St. Marys High School Foundation
This fund was created by Col. and Mrs. Tom Young for St. Marys High School, to be used for items necessary to help the school in ways that an advisory board would see fit.
